Smith's style evidently changed as their music career grew, though their feelings have since caught up with them. Smith would wear leggings and full makeup every day, saying they became a "gay clown" in the village they grew up in. When the Oscar- and Grammy-winning singer was 16 years old, Smith stopped wearing masculine clothing, they told Jamil on the first episode of her "I Weigh Interviews" series on Instagram. Smith said they identify as nonbinary and genderqueer in an interview with "The Good Place" actress and body image advocate Jameela Jamil in March 2019.
